A reason to buy a Kanye West record! (or ten)

Of late we’ve been hard pushed to say anything good about Kanye West but a declaration from the 50 Cent camp has us saving up for a copy of West’s latest album!

‘Let’s raise the stakes,’ 50 Cent states, confirming both their albums will be released on the same day

He went on to say ‘If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on September 11, I’ll no longer write music’. This seems like a curious ‘beef’ and more than likely another hip-hop marketing stunt, especially given that West is reportedly producing new material for 50 Cent.

‘I think it’s great, I think it’s a fantastic day for hip-hop,’ rich rap guy Jay-Z commented. ‘I remember having those dates [facing against] Outkast a couple of times. I actually had one with G-Unit . It’s great. It’s a fantastic thing for hip-hop, especially retail. I know they’re loving it. You’re driving people to the store. We love it, we think it’s a fantastic thing.’

What the hell, we do too. Let battle commence.

Check out this Flickr site The set called miniatures is incredible. Tiny little replica’s of classic analogue equipment from a by-gone era. Can’t really describe how cool these are so just have a peak at them and hopefully someone will buy us one.

Ok, five + days after the event we finally get round to posting. Did it go well? the answer is yes. Better than we could have imagined. Over 830 people attended and even though it was very full it was one of the friendliest crowds we’ve come across. Constant texts about how great a night everyone had, made it worthwhile. It was a tough old night and a reminder that going to these nights is always more fun than running them.

Will we do it again, yes for sure but its gonna be a little while as something like this is only special if its not on every week. Look out for US#002 in 2008/

The next Shock, if you’ve not already noticed our banner ad is with Rory Phillips on Saturday 29th September at Kennedys, It was also brought to our attention that its Shock’s first birthday which took as by surprise to the say the least!

Harmonic 33 do the pyschadelic electronic thing better than most. Funky Duck off their 1995 album Music For Film, Television and Radio Vol 1 is a Shock favourite. Here’s a track from 2002′s Extraordinary People album which was much more of a straight up instrumental album.

This was just going to a be quick post about a short Kraftwerk documentary by Austrian TV company ORF produced in 1982 but itdawned on me after a morning of dull channel hoping, before switching to the internet for my visual fix that i’m now spending almost as much time watching Youtube™ then conventional television shows.

TV as it currently exists seems to be a format on the wane. Viewing figures are dropping rapidly and many companies realise that TV on-demand and more recently online is the only way forward. Allowing people to programme their own TV schedule, choose what movies they want to watch and when is infinitely preferable to having to sit through Big Brother. Of course this luxury will come at a small price but its also possible that advertising will no longer dictate trends in what is produced and allow for more intelligent shows to be produced.

Google payed $1.65bn for Youtube™ this year which could turn out to be a bargain if Youtube™ moves away from its mostly illegal content & becomes a pay per view internet TV channel (as it seems to be tip-toeing towards) Look at the tie-ins with Apple’s Apple TV™ and the iPhone™ for more proof that its becoming more and more legitimate as a brand.Anyway, back to the original content of this post! the Kraftwerk documentary…

Studio – West Coast (Information)

Its taken me far far too long to actually stick up a review of this album, so much for the immediacy of the internet! I have however been spreading the word about it to all who will listen.

It was proceeded by single Life’s a Beach, remixed by those two Nordic hypnotic groove pioneers Todd Terje and Prins Thomas (This Sunday at Shock!)

The album itself does have a distinct space disco feel to it but perhaps a more apt description of the sound can be conjured up from the idea of putting the Happy Mondays (in their drug fueled prime!) in the studio with Lindstrom or Son Of Sound on production duties. The track Self Service most definitely has the swagger of the Mondays.

For me this is the best album i’ve heard this year and first i’ve been bugging other people to buy too in quite some time. I’ll be looking out for Information and Studio’s next releases.
